Rotary makes a Big Bang

Rotary International in Britain and Ireland - Tue, 2014-03-25 19:02

Rotarians took a stand for the first time at this year’s Big Bang Fair - the UK’s largest celebration of science and engineering for young people – at the NEC, Birmingham. The four day event was attended by around 80,000 people which provided an ideal opportunity to promote Rotary Technology Tournaments and other youth service competitions to as many visitors as possible.

Hundreds visited the Rotary stand to find out more about Rotary Technology Tournaments, which have recently been accredited by the British Science Association to qualify for a CREST Discovery Award. Many were able to get a flavour of a Rotary Technology Tournament by trying out some of the tasks on offer.

Members of the Rotary Youth Service Team were on hand to answer questions about Rotary youth competitions and distributed information packs containing leaflets detailing the Rotary Technology Tournaments, other competitions, RotaKidsInteract , RotaractYouth Exchange and RYLA leadership awards.

Tony Jordan, Chairman of the Rotary Technology Tournament Steering Group said: “The event was a great success in spreading the word about what we offer young people through youth service in our communities. We are hoping that as a result of attending the fair, more youngsters will want to take part in the activities we offer. We are already planning for next year’s event when we will be taking even greater floor space.”

New corporate members scheme

Rotary International in Britain and Ireland - Tue, 2014-03-25 16:02

The Rotary Club of Ipswich has launched a new membership scheme to enable business leaders and other organisations who are interested in joining Rotary to become corporate members.

Corporate membership costs £150 per annum and entitles a senior member of an organisation and up to three designees to become members. The senior member or any of the designees can then attend as many meetings as practicable, attend social functions and participate in community and fund raising activities.

Rotarian Roger Girling said: “There are a great number of business leaders and other organisations who we believe would be interested in joining Rotary, but through pressure of work cannot commit sufficient time for total involvement. As a club we have been contacted by many organisations who want to get involved, as it fits in with their ethos of commitment and responsibility within the local community. This is the fundamental reason for us launching our corporate membership scheme.”

Attendees at the launch event at the Holiday Inn, Ipswich were each given an information pack and a welcome letter from the club president.
