International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to PolioPlus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries.

For many years, Southam 2000 has supported the construction and maintenance of Giridih Eye Hospital which provides operations, restoring sight to 1000s of women and men in this rural area of india.

Due to extreme economic pressures, the Rotary Foundation was forced to cut the Volunteer Service Grant funds, March 2009 bringing many volunteer programmes to a grinding halt. We were desperate that the Kilimambogo Dental Clinic, Kenya, would not become one of these programmes doomed to fail because volunteers could not afford to travel and give a month’s service to this successful project.

Whilst on duty at the Sleigh before Christmas a man placed some coins in my collecting tin and then said “are you the same Rotary as the one which ran the Training Centre in New Canal Street in the 1980s”. I was pleased to confirm his belief and he then explained that having been made redundant he had taken a course in metalwork at the Training Centre subsequently gaining full employment until his recent retirement.
