Club Meeting - Guiding for Adults Goes Wild

By Robin Cooter - Posted on 27 October 2015

What a let-down!   With a title like that I was expecting a salacious expose of the escapades of older guides – drunken hen parties, intimate affairs, Email sexting, nude calendars  – how wrong I was!   Not quite what I hoped for but very interesting nether the less.   Had you heard of Trefoils, no I hadn’t either, but they are a G.G. group for the over 18s although it seem that it really the over 30s going on 80!   What you must not say though is “Oh, that’s for older guiders” and if you do and Mary’s there – Duck!

They have a varied programme of activities, for example skittles, bowls, learning new skills, exploring cuisines of the world and visits – including a visit to the control tower at Birmingham Airport but she will not say how she managed to organise that!   Like the G.G. they can also work towards badges.

Mary is County Commissioner for Trefoils in Warwickshire has been president of the Southam group but is now their secretary.

The Southam group has one of their members going to Mongolia to work in a school.   3 or 4 of the Southam Group recently joined a party of Warwickshire Trefoils visiting a G.G. “World Centre” at Cuernavaca, Mexico.  It seemed a good mix of Service – working with the elderly, culture, history, a tour bus around Mexico and fun, including a side trip to Acapulco.   Apparently the consumption of Tequila Sunrises by the pool did not result in the salacious titbits that I had been hoping for!   Next trip is to the World Centre at Sangam in India.   Fly Dubai, Mumbai (or Bombay as we old colonial hands know it by), Pune and Sangam, billed as a “Safe place for members to come together”!  Then a trip round the Golden Triangle of Agra, Jaipur and Delhi.   It should be a great trip and a real contrast to Mexico.

Next year a talk on India?
