The Kingfisher Connection

During the Second World War the Town of Redditch adopted HMS Kingfisher as part of the war effort. The ship was a 510 ton Corvette which served at Dunkirk and throughout the War before being retired in 1947. To strengthen the link the Redditch Temperance Hall, then the main social venue in the town was renamed the Kingfisher Hall in December 1942. During the development of the “New Town” the Hall was demolished in 1970 to make way for the main Shopping centre. To perpetuate the name the centre was called the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

The last HMS Kingfisher was a Bird-class patrol vessel launched in 1974 and sold in 1996.
