built homes on Beechdale Estate

For our first Vocational visit of the year on 25 August, the club visited LoCal Homes, situated on Beechdale Estate Walsall. LoCaL Homes is the off-site manufacturing arm of Midlands Housing Association the Accord Group. LoCal Homes (which stands for Low Carbon Living) offers closed timber panelised housing products which form part of its affordable, low carbon housing solution.

The factory opened in 2011 and has since made history by being the first timber factory opened by a housing association. It also boasts a UK first for the construction industry when in 2014 it built two homes in one day, as witnessed by Housing Minister, Brandon Lewis MP.

LoCaL Homes has created over 20 local jobs in the region as well as investing in training for all team members to NVQ Level 2 Manufacturing Processes.

Over recent years timber frame has been growing in popularity in house building, and is increasingly selected as a core structural component on new housing developments due to its speed of construction and sustainability credentials. Offsite manufacturing also brings a huge programme benefits and minimises disturbance during build processes.

Members were shown how the process of manufacture works and then had a look at completed homes on site.
