GREENPEACE - PETER ROBINSON

On Tuesday 26th April 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to Coventry North, Peter Robinson from Greenpeace which was formed in 1971. This came about as the result of a small team of university activists setting sail from Vancouver in an old fishing boat. They were the founders of Greenpeace and believed a few individuals could make a difference.  The illustrated talk was found to be very interesting by members and the ‘Friends of Rotary Ladies’ present.

FARMERS OVERSEAS ACTION GROUP - RTN. MIKE McCONVILLE

On Tuesday 19th April 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club, Mike McConville from Stourbridge Rotary Club who gave an interesting second part illustrated talk  about the Farmers Overseas Action Group in Uganda. It was relating to the aid, advice, education and instruction given to the local people to help them with their way of life. Past President Mike White gave a vote of thanks and President Bob gave Mike a cheque to help with the charity. Photographs were taken with good wishes for the future.

MARY'S MEALS - SUE NIGHTINGALE

On Tuesday 23rd March 2016, Susan Nightingale, who represents “Mary’s Meals “came to Coventry North Rotary Club and was introduced by President Bob Preston to give a talk on this world wide school feeding charity. The Club also welcomed theFriends of Rotary Ladies for joining us again this month.. Susan gave an enthusiastic talk about the charity which started in 2002, by feeding 200 children; and today they are feeding over a million every school day, across four continents. The presentation was very well received and a cheque was presented on behalf of the Club to Susan.

REBUILDING DRESDEN FRAUENKIRCHE - DAVID CROUT

On Tuesday 15th March 2016, President Bob Preston introduced David Crout, who came to address Coventry North Rotary Club regarding the Destruction, Reconciliation and Rebuilding of the Frauenkirche, Dresden. The informative talk was illustrated with photographs both new and old. The protestant cathedral-like building, in the centre of the Dresden City, was situated in part of the old East Germany, and left as a pile of bricks following  its destruction in February in 1945 by Allied bombing.

ONE MAN AND HIS DOG - ALAN WRIGHT

On Tuesday 8th March 2016, Alan Wright from the Myton Hospice, was welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club by President Bob Preston for lunch.  Alan gave a talk to the Club, 'One Man and his Dog', which perhaps should have been 'Jack and One Man'!  Jack is a ‘Pat’ dog but sadly was not present.  Alan was able to tell us about the adventures that Jack, a springer spaniel, had when  Alan had taken him into Homes, Schools and Hospitals, etc., for people to meet and pat.  The talk was very well received and many questions were asked.  Past President Philip Jackson

COVENTRY WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL ACADEMY - PAUL CLARIDGE

On Tuesday 16th February 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club, Paul Claridge, Business Development Director of YMCA, Coventry and Warwickshire. Paul spoke about the various parts of the organisation including Coventry Wheelchair Basketball Academy’s success boasting several national league teams.  The talk was well received and many questions asked by members. Rotarian  Andrew Pargetter gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the Club.

COVENTRY AMBASSADORS - DAVID BOUGHEY

On Tuesday 9th February 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to the Club, David Boughey, from Coventry Ambassadors.  This is part of the Events and Training Volunteers group which was inspired by the 2012 Olympic games organisation.  David spoke about his involvement with the team of over 350 volunteers who wish to promote and inspire members of the public to provide quality events, training and volunteers.

PEDAL FOR POLIO - RTN LEANNE BEVERLEY

On Tuesday 26th January 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed Rotarian Leanne Beverley to Coventry North Rotary Club, to give a talk on her adventures whilst touring for a week on a bicycle in Rajahstan, India, based in Jaipur.  Our Ladies' Rotary Friends Group also attended for the lunch and the talk. Leanne treated us to a taste of the real India with her well illustrated powerpoint presentation.

MINIATURE ENGRAVING - GRAHAM SHORT

On Tuesday 19th January we welcomed to the club Graham Short, Managing Director of Fine Arts Limited.  Graham specialises in miniature engraving and has engraved invitation cards, etc. for royalty.  One of his highlights is the Lord's Praver on top of a pin head.  He gave an illustrated talk with unbelievable photographs of mottoes on the edge of a razor blade and on specks of gold in the eye of a needle, amongst many other small items.

CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT RURAL ENGLAND - JOHN WHARAM

On Tuesday 12th January 2016, President Elect John Green welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club, John Wharam, Branch Development Manager  for the Warwickshire Campaign to Protect  the Rural Countryside. He was hosted by Past President Dick Dixon.  John gave a very interesting talk relating to conserving our ‘green lands’ and the proposed HS2 which has been planned to run though the county.  Many questions were asked by the members. and photographs were taken to mark the occasion.  John was presented with a cheque for his charity.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE - REV. RACHEL BURGESS

On Tuesday 22nd December 2015, Coventry North Rotary Club hosted Reverend Rachel Burgess and our Lady Friends of Rotary at its annual Christmas Lunch, and Christmas Message. We had a beautiful turkey meal with all the trimmings. President Bob Preston introduced the speaker Rev. Rachel Burgess, and Rotarian Brian Sharp gave the vote of thanks.

MY CHILDHOOD IN OCCUPIED HOLLAND IN WW2 - ANDY LOOMANS

Andy Loomans came to Coventry North Rotary Club on Tuesday 10th November and gave a talk regarding his memories of living in Holland in World War II during the German occupation. Club members are at the age that they can relate to the terrible problems he endured, and shortages of food, etc. The members found the lunchtime very interesting with the photographs of the past showing the destruction, and then how Middleberg has been rebuilt.

On Tuesday 27th October 2015, we welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club, our Ladies and Alan Rogers MBE, a retired police officer from Warwickshire Constabulary.

GUIDE DOGS - MARY GARLAND AND FRANK LYNN

On Tuesday 20th October, our Rotary Club entertained  Frank Lynn and Mary Garland from the Guide Dogs (Coventry Volunteer Group). They gave a very interesting talk about the work of the guide dogs and their training. Many questions were asked and the speakers were thanked by Past President Philip Jackson. Photographs were taken by Brian Sharp to mark the occasion. Members wished the speakers and the charity every success for the future and presented Mary with a cheque for their funds.

HOPE AND HOMES FOR CHILDREN - CLAIRE WRIGHT. AND MARVIN MCKENZIE FROM TRINIDAD.

On Tuesday 29th September 2015, Coventry North Rotary Club hosted Claire Wright from Hope and Homes for Children, a charity which arranges for young people in orphanages, to be placed with families in homes. This has been successful in various parts of the World. We also hosted a young student from Trinidad, Marvin McKenzie, who was being supported by the Rotary Clubs of Piarco Trinidad, Kenilworth and Coventry North. PDG David Robinson hosted him at our meeting.

On Tuesday 22nd September 2015 at Coventry North Rotary Club, we hosted the Ladies and we had a very interesting illustrated talk by Rotarian Mike McConville from Stourbridge. He spoke about the Farmers Overseas Action Group operating in Uganda and the help it brought to the locals.

RIVERBANK ACADEMY - DAWN O'SULLIVAN

On Tuesday 15th September 2015, Dawn O’Sullivan visited Coventry North Rotary Club and gave a very interesting talk about Riverbank Academy (previously Alice Stevens School). This was followed by questions. President Bob thanked Dawn and wished the school well for the future.

BEDWORTH ALMSHOUSES - JOHN BURTON AND RTN. KEN ELLIOTT

On Tuesday 9th. September 2015, Coventry North Rotary Club entertained Ken Elliott and John Burton who spoke about Nicholas Chamberlaine Almshouses in Bedworth. John gave a very interesting talk which was followed by many questions about the period and people at the time. Brian Sharp thanked the Speaker on behalf of the Club and photos were taken by him. John and Ken (a Trustee for the Charity) were wished well for the future.

ACORNS WITH GABRIELLE

Assistant Governor Gabrielle Back visited us on Tuesday 25th August to tell us about her Acorns Collage Project. Proceeds will be given to Acorns Children's Hospice. Local schools will be encouraged to enter a collage depicting acorns. A donation was given to Gabrielle. We were delighted to have six lady visitors at this meeting. Photographs by Brian Sharp.
