TNT - THE NEWS TEAM - NORMAN BARTLAM

On Tuesday 27th September 2016, President John Green welcomed to the Club, Norman Bartlam from ‘TNT - The News Team’, and the Lady Friends of the Club. Norman gave a talk about the news programmes that had been produced by local groups for the last 20 years and transmitted to cover Birmingham and the ‘Black Country.  After the illustrated talk, questions were asked and Past President Peter Thompson gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the Club.  A cheque was presented to Norman with every good wish for the future.

KIDZ KLUB - SARAH ADAMSON

On Tuesday 13th September 2016, President John Green was pleased to welcome to Coventry North Rotary Club, Sarah Adamson from the KidsKlub Charity, which has five clubs situated around the City.  This is a Christian organisation which supports young people basically between 6  and 12 years of age with help and guidance.  The children come from problem homes and the leaders have had a great success with them and their families.  Sarah gave a very informative talk which led to many questions being asked.

MERCY SHIPS - MARY FEARON

On Tuesday 23rd August, we were joined by our Lady Friends of Coventry North, to hear a wonderfully illustrated explanation of the charity Mercy Ships.  Mary Fearon, herself a nurse and volunteer on the Africa Mercy, was welcomed by President John and he was pleased to give her a cheque to aid the future good work of the charity, which has been in existence now for 35 years..

WRITING THRILLERS AND CRIME NOVELS - RTN. TOM BRYSON

On Tuesday 16th August 2016, President John Green had the pleasure of welcoming to Coventry North Rotary Club, Rotarian Tom Bryson of the Kinver Rotary Club.  He gave a very interesting talk about being a Crime and Thriller writer, having written many short stories and four novels which he has had published. aThey are ’Too Smart to Die’, 'In it for the Money’, ‘Sarcophagus’ and ‘The Zeppelin of Kinver Edge’.  A lot of interest was shown in the subject and many questions asked.  Rotarian Andrew Pargetter gave a vote of thanks.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S VISIT - DG PETER ROBERTS

On Tuesday 26th July 2016, President John Green had the pleasure of welcoming District Governor Peter Roberts to Coventry North Rotary Club, and also President John Boothroyd and Alison from the Kenilworth Rotary Club. Peter outlined his plans for the future year with his aims and guidance for suggested events. Questions were asked and photographs taken.

DRIVERLESS CARS - PROFESSOR ANDREW PARKES

On Tuesday 19th July 2016, Professor Andrew Parkes from Coventry University, was welcomed by President John Green to The Rotary Club of Coventry North, to give a talk on Driverless Cars!. We learnt that in the near future, this will be a possibility and should prevent many road accidents, (so we are told).  Members found the subject very interesting and many questions were asked. President Elect Steve Gage gave the vote of thanks.and President John gave Andrew a cheque for his charity and wished him well for the future.

PRESIDENTIAL HANDOVER 2016

On Tuesday 5th July 2016, the annual changeover of officers at Coventry North Rotary Club took place. President Bob Preston handed over the chain of office to incoming President John Green. Forty four guests were present to see regalia of the Club exchanged. Steve Gage was installed as the President Elect. Best wishes were given to both parties and congratulations to Bob as the outgoing President for a successful year.  Photographs were taken by Brian Sharp.

PRESIDENTIAL VALEDICTORY ADDRESS - BOB PRESTON

On Tuesday 28th June 2016, President Bob Preston gave his valedictory address to the Rotary Club of Coventry North which was attended by fellow Rotarians and the Friends of Rotary Ladies.  Bob gave an excellent talk outlining the past year of Rotary and the many things that had occurred.  Past President Ashwin Kanabar stated that he would not be joining us in the next Rotary year due to business pressures.

A VISIT TO CHINA - PAST PRESIDENT ROGER WOODWARD

On Tuesday 21st June 2016, Past President Roger Woodward gave an illustrated talk about his visit with Sylvia to China.  An excellent tour of the country with a visit to the Terracotta Army, which was truly amazing. A vote of thanks was given by Past President Michael White and a cheque handed over to Roger in aid of Food Bank, by President Bob Preston.

On Tuesday 24th May 2016, Graham Short, a micro-engraving artist, visited Coventry North for lunch and was welcomed by President Elect John Green. Graham gave an illustrated talk to members and our Lady Friends of Rotary regarding his miniature engraving of the Lord’s Prayer on the head of a pin, and  how he engraved an effigy of the head of the Queen on the inside of the eye of a needle. Following a fascinating forty minute talk, Past President Peter Thompson gave a vote of thanks.

NURSING MEMORIES FROM THE PAST - DIANE CASTLEDINE

On Tuesday 10th May 2016,  Miss Diane Castledine, Retired Director of Nursing at the University Hospital, Coventry, visited the Coventry North Rotary Club. She fondly spoke about memories of past of incidents and experiences in years gone by.  Diane was welcomed by President Bob Preston and hosted by Past President Philip Jackson.  Her talk was very humorous and rekindled many memories. Diane was very well received and presented with a cheque towards the Royal National Lifeboats Institution, and wished well with her talks and fund raising in the future.

GREENPEACE - PETER ROBINSON

On Tuesday 26th April 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to Coventry North, Peter Robinson from Greenpeace which was formed in 1971. This came about as the result of a small team of university activists setting sail from Vancouver in an old fishing boat. They were the founders of Greenpeace and believed a few individuals could make a difference.  The illustrated talk was found to be very interesting by members and the ‘Friends of Rotary Ladies’ present.

FARMERS OVERSEAS ACTION GROUP - RTN. MIKE McCONVILLE

On Tuesday 19th April 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club, Mike McConville from Stourbridge Rotary Club who gave an interesting second part illustrated talk  about the Farmers Overseas Action Group in Uganda. It was relating to the aid, advice, education and instruction given to the local people to help them with their way of life. Past President Mike White gave a vote of thanks and President Bob gave Mike a cheque to help with the charity. Photographs were taken with good wishes for the future.

MARY'S MEALS - SUE NIGHTINGALE

On Tuesday 23rd March 2016, Susan Nightingale, who represents “Mary’s Meals “came to Coventry North Rotary Club and was introduced by President Bob Preston to give a talk on this world wide school feeding charity. The Club also welcomed theFriends of Rotary Ladies for joining us again this month.. Susan gave an enthusiastic talk about the charity which started in 2002, by feeding 200 children; and today they are feeding over a million every school day, across four continents. The presentation was very well received and a cheque was presented on behalf of the Club to Susan.

REBUILDING DRESDEN FRAUENKIRCHE - DAVID CROUT

On Tuesday 15th March 2016, President Bob Preston introduced David Crout, who came to address Coventry North Rotary Club regarding the Destruction, Reconciliation and Rebuilding of the Frauenkirche, Dresden. The informative talk was illustrated with photographs both new and old. The protestant cathedral-like building, in the centre of the Dresden City, was situated in part of the old East Germany, and left as a pile of bricks following  its destruction in February in 1945 by Allied bombing.

ONE MAN AND HIS DOG - ALAN WRIGHT

On Tuesday 8th March 2016, Alan Wright from the Myton Hospice, was welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club by President Bob Preston for lunch.  Alan gave a talk to the Club, 'One Man and his Dog', which perhaps should have been 'Jack and One Man'!  Jack is a ‘Pat’ dog but sadly was not present.  Alan was able to tell us about the adventures that Jack, a springer spaniel, had when  Alan had taken him into Homes, Schools and Hospitals, etc., for people to meet and pat.  The talk was very well received and many questions were asked.  Past President Philip Jackson

COVENTRY WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL ACADEMY - PAUL CLARIDGE

On Tuesday 16th February 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to Coventry North Rotary Club, Paul Claridge, Business Development Director of YMCA, Coventry and Warwickshire. Paul spoke about the various parts of the organisation including Coventry Wheelchair Basketball Academy’s success boasting several national league teams.  The talk was well received and many questions asked by members. Rotarian  Andrew Pargetter gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the Club.

COVENTRY AMBASSADORS - DAVID BOUGHEY

On Tuesday 9th February 2016, President Bob Preston welcomed to the Club, David Boughey, from Coventry Ambassadors.  This is part of the Events and Training Volunteers group which was inspired by the 2012 Olympic games organisation.  David spoke about his involvement with the team of over 350 volunteers who wish to promote and inspire members of the public to provide quality events, training and volunteers.
