Jole Rider Bikes stacked in the container

Ninety-seven bikes were delivered to the Bike Shed at Tetbury to be prepared for shipment to Africa.

There were three from RC Handsworth, twelve from RC Edgbaston Convention, one from Birmingham and eighty-one from the King Edward VI Five Ways Interact Club. Handsworth, Edgbaston Convention and Birmingham clubs also donated a total of over £430 to support the transport of the bikes.

Areas in the District for 2013/14

The following areas will come into force on 1 July 2013.

Clean water brings better health

Residents of Makoor, Kerala, India, show the effects of years of drinking and cooking with highly fluoridated water.

The World Health Organization estimates that almost one-tenth of global diseases could be prevented by improving the water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and the management of water resources.

The citizens of Patari, a village in Uttar Pradesh, are among 25 million people in India alone who suffer the consequences of fluorosis, an irreversible condition caused by elevated levels of fluoride in drinking water. The painful effects of fluorosis can include bone deformities, calcification of ligaments and tendons, and abnormal bone density.

ShelterBox sends tents for Pakistan quake survivors

ShelterBox tents are en route to help displaced families in Mashkail, an area in Balochistan Province in south-western Pakistan that has been the most affected by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which hit inside southern Iran near the Pakistan border on 16 April.

The violent tremors flattened much of Mashkail and the surrounding region including houses and shops. Media reports are saying national relief efforts have been delayed due to the isolation of the area.

Hospital Equipment for India - Can you help?

I have just returned from two weeks on business in India including a weekend in Kolkata. I had a meeting with Mr. B.D Agarwal, one of our long time suppliers and business associates who is the owner of a foundry and a Rotarian who has become extremely active in community service.

Village Water - Lessons for Life

Welcome to Village Water.jpeg

Village Water, the UK based charity providing clean water in Zambia, is very much aware of the important link between sanitation and improved health. They also realise that hygiene education is key to the uptake of sanitation. Inspired by Rotary, Village Water have developed a hygiene education programme known as LESSONS for LIFE, delivered to young school children who are eager to learn and who can, with simple ‘pester power’, persuade their elders to change their ways. It is solely funded by Rotary clubs and the current year’s programme in six rural schools is almost fully funded.

Help urgently needed!

Having discussed the Syrian crisis with RIBI President John Minhinick, I would suggest that clubs wishing to help the Syrian refugees should support ShelterBox who are currently working in the Lebanon and Jordan. Further updates will be made as information becomes available.
