Biggest storm in history hits the Philippines - ShelterBox

By Stella Almond - Posted on 13 November 2013

Typhoon Haiyan has caused unimaginable devastation and suffering in the Philippines. With winds of 195mph, the typhoon is the largest storm ever recorded to make landfall and current reports indicate that upwards of 10,000 people may have lost their lives. It has been reported that at least 630,000 people have been displaced and are in desperate need of emergency shelter, food and clean drinking water.

ShelterBox is already responding and I wanted to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed with our response efforts so far, so that you can share this information with the clubs in your district. How is ShelterBox responding?

A ShelterBox Response Team was already in the Philippines when the typhoon struck, helping following last month’s 7.2 magnitude earthquake which damaged 34,000 homes. The team are now busy helping local people cope with the aftermath of not only an earthquake but now one of the most powerful storms on record.

A further two ShelterBox Response Teams are en route to the Philippines to assist with coordinating our response in-country. ShelterBox’s response will focus in three of the badly affected regions – Tacloban, Cebu and Bohol. Reports are coming in of 80-90% damage of some towns in these provincesFollowing last month’s earthquake and Friday’s typhoon, all ShelterBox aid pre-positioned in the Philippines has now been despatched, en route to the disaster areas. The ShelterBox Operations Team have been working around the clock to plan the logistics of getting other pre-positioned stock in places like Dubai and Melbourne to the stricken country. Further ShelterBoxes will also be packed at ShelterBox HQ over the coming days.

Earlier today, Response Team Volunteer, Mark Curnow, who has just arrived in the region, said, “In all my years as a Response Team volunteer I have never seen devastation like this. The loss of life, the total destruction and the desperation of the survivors – I find it difficult to find the words to describe to you what I’m seeing.”How can Rotary help us?

ShelterBox has now launched a dedicated Typhoon Haiyan Emergency Appeal to raise funds to help us provide emergency shelter and the essential aid these families desperately need to survive. Rotary clubs can help ShelterBox by spreading the word of our work and of our appeal, encouraging support from far and wide in any of the following ways:

· Make a donation!

Donations to this appeal will be used to fund our response to Typhoon Haiyan.
