We are keen to promote the work that many of you are involved in in District 1060 as well as keep you informed of the work done in RIBI and RI international. Please ask if you have any queries and we will do our best to help you. Our policy is to try and provide as much information through newsletters and links to websites as we can to help clubs find international projects. And to help clubs with projects to find clubs to support them. We will also support RIBI initiatives in responding to disasters - normally clubs should donate to the box projects or support any national appeals through DEC which are advertised.

Reach beyond your community and connect with others who share common interests. Make a positive impact on people’s lives worldwide. Packaged grant helps train nurses in Uganda

Dr. Francis Tusubira with children at a health camp in Namalemba

By Dr. Francis “Tusu” Tusubira, Rotary Foundation Chair for District 9200 and a member of the Rotary Club of Kampala-North, Uganda

Rotary to me is about going into the trenches with communities and working with them. I like my feet and hands community muddy. So I had serious reservations at first about packaged grants. It sounded like The Rotary Foundation would do all the work and it would be handed to Rotarians as a done deal. Then I received an email from the Foundation that Aga Khan University had been identified as a potential strategic partner to train nurses within their university system in Eastern Africa. They were asking if District 9200 would be interested.

RIBI President John Minhinick

On Tuesday, 27 November, RIBI President John Minhinick, his wife Sheila and District 1200 Governor Peter Noble spent the morning at the home of the Water-Survival Box. Following a detailed briefing by Chairman PDG Tony Quinn, our VIP visitors joined the trustees and other members of the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge in a packing session. The boxes packed on Tuesday will be added to existing stock and sent to the next disaster.

We are again participating in this fundraising promotion to try and generate online donations for 'Water Survival Boxes' (we raised over £20,000 through the 2011 promotion).

Map of Haiti where Water Survival Boxes are being distributed

The Rotary Haiti Task Force is liaising with the Haitian Government to ensure distribution takes place so as to gain maximum benefit from each of the 400 boxes.

Polio eradication shifts into emergency mode

Despite the dramatic drop in polio cases in the last year, the threat of continued transmission due to funding and immunization gaps has driven the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to launch the Global Polio Emergency Action Plan 2012-13.

Let's Celebrate World Polio Day

Rotary across the world is celebrating involvement in the eradication of polio.  Today, the 24th of October marks the birthday of Dr. Jonas Salk,  who developed the world’s first safe and effective vaccine against this crippling and sometimes deadly disease.

This week also sees the publication of an independent monitoring board  report on the global effort. The tone is blunt, and urges us to ensure we complete the campaign, saying:

Urgent Appeal for RIBI linked project in Iramba

A project  in Tanzania that RIBI has been funding is in its final stages. We have  come so far with this project and have provided thousands of people  with a lasting supply of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

However, there is still a lot of work to do in order to reach everyone and we urgently need to drill 6 new boreholes and rehabilitate 8 shallow dug wells.

We are looking for a final push in funding between now and World Water Day, 22nd March 2012, to finalize this work.
