The Rotary Club of Kinver is delighted to be involved with other clubs in District 1060 in a matching grant programme in Sri Lanka. The latest update on progress shows that the roadway concrete work and building up the ground level at the road edges has been completed. The attached photos show that the new road surface had remained above the water level after a recent period of heavy rainfall and flooding. As can be seen, adjacent roads and access footpaths were submerged.

Thanks to contributions from Rotary Clubs, District 1060 Foundation grants and The Rotary Foundation Matching Grants, conditions for movement around the Avarakotuwa Settlement have been improved for the residents. The water levels rise quickly during very heavy rainfall but, following concreting of roads, the areas concerned, including the Buddhist Temple, were evacuated safely. Residents then benefitted from safe and stable surfaces as the flood levels receded. The residents and RC Wattala are grateful for thehelp, but It can be seen readily that there tremendous scope for further help for this community.
