The Club Raising Funds for Polio for Pride

The Leamington Spa Regency Rotary Group joined in with Warwickshire Pride celebrations Saturday 28th JUne, raising £160 for The Rotary End Polio Now campaign with a “Purple Prizes for Polio at Pride” tombola.  Why the colour purple?  Because it is the tiny dab of colour on a child’s little finger that indicates that that child has been immunised against polio.  Just £1 will protect five children.

For over the last 25 years Rotary has been working hard to rid the World of polio – a terrible disease that can kill or severely disable children.  Today, this disease, which used to kill and maim even in this country, is now mainly confined to Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria where is it still endemic, but we are tantalisingly close to achieving our aim to eradicate the disease as we have done in the rest of the World.

Ian Brookes-Howells (pictured left), Vice President, said “despite the rain we had a really good time at Warwickshire Pride, it’s good to show that Rotary is committed to supporting the diverse communities of Warwickshire.”

Also pictured is the new President, Rob Cawley who took office on the 1st July.  The club has great plans for the next 12 months, having doubled in size in the last 2 years.  Leamington Spa Regency is unique in having more women than men.  In the forthcoming programme the club will be welcoming the Town Mayor and holding Leamington’s heat of Rotary’s Youth Speaks public speaking competition for schools, amongst many other events and causes.  The club welcomes anyone who would be interesting in joining the club.

The club meets every Monday evening, 6.30 pm, at the Angle Hotel, Regent Street, Leamington Spa.
