SHIPWRECKED IN ANTARCTICA - GEORGIE HALE

An unexpected end to the Holiday!  Well what a story that we did not expect, told by Georgie Hale at the Coventry North meeting on Tuesday 24th April.  Georgie had been adding to her bucket list with her late husband Clive, by having an Antarctic holiday about twelve years ago, when the ship they were on sprung a leak whilst negotiating the pack ice.

BIRDS OF PREY - NORMAN TOWE

A bird in the hand.  This was true today when Norman Towe and his wife Iris,brought four birds of prey to show us at the Coventry North Rotary Club lunch on Tuesday 27th March.  Norman demonstrated the white faced owl, the Harris hawk, a kestrel and the beautiful barn owl which everybody loved.  These were appreciated by the Coventry North Ladies  and friends who had come to see our ‘special’ visitors.  The talk lasted longer than usual, but we

LIFE AND TIMES OF . . . . ANDY BLAIR

“Local Boy makes it to the Top”.   We were so pleased to have a Bedworth lad as a speaker at the  Coventry North Rotary Club lunch of Tuesday 13th March.  Andy Blair played for Coventry City Football Club and later for a number of Premier Clubs, was the guest speaker, being introduced by President Steve Gage.  Andy related many experiences and mentioned people he had had the privilege of meeting in his short playing career, until at 25, he was forced from top class football due to a leg injury.

THE LIFE OF BARNES WALLIS - ANNE LANGLEY

One of the Great men of the 20th Century, Sir Barnes Wallis.  He was the subject of the talk given by Anne Langley, who revisited us on Tuesday 20th March 2018, the great niece of the  inventor and man of ideas. 

Anne was introduced by the President Steve Gage at the Rotary Club weekly meeting where we were joined by nine members of Bedworth Rotary Club, who were on a ‘scatter’ day.  Anne gave us an illustrated talk about the inventions and ideas Barnes Wallis had, including working on airships, surface torpedo (bouncing bombs),  swing winged aircraft and many more.  Rotarian Brian Sharp gave a vote of thanks to the speaker and later took photographs of the occasion.  President Steve gave a cheque to Anne for the charity she supports, (Madam Curie Nursing),

RSPCA - DAVID BUDD

Considering the young man, Dave Budd, had not spoken in public before, he gave an excellent presentation regarding life at the Coventry, Nuneaton and District RSPCA, on Tuesday 27th February.  The centre takes in many wild animals and birds, looking after their welfare and care, until they care be released or rehomed.  Dave was hosted by Pa

WARWICK TEACHING IN AFRICA - MARVIN MCKENZIE

On Tuesday 13th February, we were privileged to welcome back to the club, Marvin McKenzie, a student in his last year at Warwick University whom we have help to support during his studies.  He gave us an interesting illustrated talk on his six weeks of teaching in a school in Africa.  He was astounded at the low level of academic achievement attained there.  He was presented with a cheque towards his charity at Warwick University.  We were all extremely pleased to see how he has matured and gained so much confidence in the last two and a half years, and wished him well f

How great it was to welcome Dr. Bill Crofts from the School of Engineering at Warwick University to Coventry North Rotary Club for the second time.  President Steve Gage introduced him to the lady guests and Rotary members for a lunchtime meeting.  Bill spoke about the new satellite project which he and ten members of his team had been working on, having achieved a number of firsts in the process, with micro satellite communication.

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE - JOHN WETHERBY

On Tuesday 14th November 2017, John Wetherby was welcomed to Coventry North by President Steve Gage and gave an illustrated talk on Tools for Self Reliance.  He was able to produce many kinds of tools including sewing machines.  He emphasised that the items donated should be of good quality.  These tools were sent on to Africa for distribution which helped the locals provided an independent existence.  <

BEES ABROAD - BILL CROFTS

On Tuesday 31st October 2017, President Steve Gage welcomed to Coventry North, Bill Crofts, who gave an illustrated talk on beekeeping.  He described the various life cycles and development of a bee, and the problems of that can arise.  This was particularly interesting to Past President Bob Preston, who had kept a number of hives in the past.

BRANDON SILK MILL - ANNE LANGLEY

On Tuesday 17th October 2017, President Steve Gage welcomed to Coventry North, Anne Langley, who gave an illustrated talk on the Brandon Silk Mill.  No members present had heard of the eighteenth century industry before Anne spoke, but maps and documents indicate it was quite an established industry.  Rotarians were quite fascinated by the subject and many questions were asked. 

THE FUN OF ORIENTEERING - BOB BRANDON

The Rotary Club of Coventry North welcomed the Club Ladies on 26th September 2017 to their Club lunch at the Coventry and North Warwickshire Sports Club.  Bob Brandon, a good friend of Past President John Green, was the speaker of the day talking about ‘The Fun of Orienteering’.
