Rotary Club of Redditch in Emden, Germany

Redditch visitors to Emden, Germany

A group of four Rotarians, and their partners, joined with a similarly sized group from Droitwich in the latest visit to Emden in Germany, as guests of the Rotary Club of Emden. This longstanding exchange, first started in the 1950's, sees reciprocating visits every two years, with successive generations of Rotarians sharing hospitality and friendship.

For the Rotarians from England, travel arrangements were very much a question of 'trains, planes and automobiles', including one of our Droitwich colleagues flying himself there!

As always, our Emden hosts laid on a great programme, with splendid hospitality. Whilst some members indulged their passion for golf at the delightful Papenburg Golf Club, the non-golfers amongst us were able to enjoy a visit to the nearby State Garden Show (think Chelsea, without Monty Don). As the good weather continued, we enjoyed a boat trip aboard the restored 1934 coaster 'Ems', which took us across the estuary to Holland which, being a Sunday, was decidely closed! A superb nautical experience nonetheless.

The morning of the final day was spent at the Emden Kunsthalle (art gallery), the Director of which happens to be a Rotarian who provided a special private viewing. As the day drew to a close with much snacking and feasting some of us were no doubt thinking: "how do we follow this?". But of course, it's not about one-upmanship, and Emden's visit in 2016 will be a chance to renew friendships made, but also meet new members from their thriving club.
