Azad Choudhury 'Annual Curry' fundraising dinner

Monika Badham

The Azad Choudhury Academy Fundraising Dinner is becoming a bit of an institution each year. Members of both Solihull and Birmingham Rotary clubs, with their guests, enjoy a wonderful meal and hear an update on the inspiring work that is being doen at the Academy

The latest Fund Raising Dinner at Regards Restaurant was a huge success with over seventy people attending. Those attending were shown an updated video of the children participating in dress making classes, carpentry, sport, English lessons, traditional dancing and the school prize giving. Two years ago we had spoken of Parvez, who  was one of the first boys to attend the school. We had high hopes for him achieving good results in the external exams, and now it is great to report that he had been accepted in the Bangladesh Military College for Officer Training.

Eleven further children found sponsors on Sunday, bringing the total supported by people in England to close on 150 children. One of the highlights of the evening was the President of the Rotary Club of Birmingham, Derek Webley, presenting the” Paul Harris Fellowship Award”  to the Headmaster of the Academy in recognition of his “dedication to the school”. The Paul Harris Fellowship is a Rotary Award given “ in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world”. The award was presented to Azad Choudhury who will take it to the headmaster on his return to Bangladesh in October.

Guests   attending the dinner showed great generosity in raising over £2300.00. In addition to sponsorships mentioned above, the remaining funds will go towards improved teaching equipment and helping school leavers, who will not go on to further education, with tools and equipment to set up micro businesses in the community.

Monika and Barry thank all who attended and those who could not make it, but sent a donation for your continued generosity.
