Southam Young Chefs Excel

By Webmaster - Posted on 10 December 2012

On Wednesday Southam College hosted the first round of the Rotary Young Chef competition.

The winners were Emily Buckley and Chloe Morse (Year 12), and Jessica Burton (Year 10). Emily and Chloe made Chorizo Chicken and Raspberry Creme Fraiche tart.) Jessica created a meal of Roasted fish with a Parmesan crust and Toffee apple cakes, they will now go through to the next round of the competition.

The runners up were Year 7 students Rachel Clarke, Jessica’s sister Mollie and Year 8 students, Kiera Hyams and Emily Boddington. These young chefs will need to have a cook off to decide who will be the final member of the College going through to the next round.

The competition was jointly organised by the Rotary Clubs of Southam 2000 and Southam in conjunction with Mrs Hayley Bamforth and other members of the college staff. It is part of a national competition organised by Rotary around the country, in association with Filippo Berio, where the best Young Chefs compete for the title of National champion.

There were 43 contestants at Southam College, which is significantly more than previous years, they ranged from Year 7 students to Year 12, all of which had to prepare and present a two course meal for judges to assess. Assessment is made, not only on the quality of the food, but also on planning and timing, skills used, hygiene and safety and table presentation.

There was a wide selection of menus which included Rabbit, Duck and home-made Cornish Pasties. The standard of food was fantastic and eventually, after extensive testing and re-testing, the judges were able identify the winners and runners up.

The Mayor of Southam, Mike Gaffney, presented the awards to the competitors and praised the level of skill and achievement of all of the students and thanked Mrs Bamforth and the Rotary Clubs for organising a splendid event and the judges for all of their efforts. He is now going on a diet!
